Distinct Features Between the Belle Époque and Edwardian Periods:
While the jewelry styles of these two eras are very similar due to the overlapping nature of the periods, there are some shared characteristics:
- Platinum. A revolutionary material became widely used due to its strength, durability, and ability to hold delicate settings. It enabled jewelers to create intricate designs with less metal bulk.
- Diamonds. Diamonds were the star of the show, often set in platinum to maximize their brilliance. Old European cut, rose cut, and early brilliant cut diamonds were common.
- Pearls. Natural pearls were highly prized, but cultured pearls were also gaining popularity. Often used in necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.
- Light and delicate designs. Jewelry was designed to be light, airy, and graceful. Garlands, ribbons, lace, and floral motifs were popular.
- Pastel colors. Soft pastel colors like pink, blue, green, and lavender were favored, often achieved using gemstones like sapphires, aquamarines, and peridots.
- Milgraining. A decorative technique where tiny beads of metal were applied along the edges of settings, adding a subtle texture and sparkle.
-
Motifs. Common motifs included:
- Garlands & wreaths: Representing beauty and abundance.
- Ribbons & bows: Adding a touch of femininity and elegance.
- Lace & guipure: Imitating delicate fabrics.
- Flowers & foliage: Inspired by nature.
- Geometric shapes: Particularly towards the end of the Edwardian period, anticipating Art Deco.
The Belle Époque and Edwardian periods were closely related times of peace, prosperity, and artistic expression. Their jewelry reflects these values, with a focus on light, delicate designs, precious materials, and elegant motifs. The primary difference lies in the geographic and cultural lens through which these trends were expressed, with the Belle Époque emphasizing Parisian flair and Art Nouveau, and the Edwardian era showcasing a more refined and luxurious British style, with its specific love of bows and dog collars.
