The name traces back to James "Jem" Belcher, a celebrated English boxer of the early 1800s — an unlikely namesake for a jewelry setting, but the term stuck, and by the Victorian era the belcher (or buttercup) had become a defining engagement ring form. The construction is what sets it apart: prong and mounting are cast as a single unbroken piece, cupping the stone in an open-air setting so that diamond and band sit at the same height. This ring began as a mold taken directly from an original antique belcher setting, reproduced in exacting detail and cast new in 14K gold — Petra Star's signature Bridal approach to the style.
