18K Yellow Gold Chrysoprase Pendant — Reimagined from a Vintage Italian Brooch, Circa 1970s–80s
A brooch that no longer wanted to be a brooch. This pendant began its life as a vintage Italian pin, hallmarked 18K ITALY and dating to circa the 1970s–80s — the era of confident, sculptural gold design, when a scalloped lattice bezel and a bold cabochon stone were the whole statement, no further ornament required. At Petra Star, we saw a different future for it. The original pin finding has been upcycled into the bail, so the piece now slides freely onto a heavy chain or a strand of pearls or beads, and the stone has been reoriented horizontally — a small adjustment that gives a decades-old design an unmistakably modern line.
At the center sits a substantial cabochon of chrysoprase, the rare apple-green variety of chalcedony prized since antiquity for a color so vivid it needs no enhancement — nickel is nature's only colorant here, and no dye or treatment has been applied. Held fast in a scalloped lattice bezel, the stone's soft, waxy luster plays beautifully against the warmth of the 18K gold surrounding it, the openwork lattice letting light move around the stone rather than boxing it in.
Chrysoprase has long carried a reputation for optimism — the Romans and Greeks associated green stones broadly with renewal and hope, and chrysoprase specifically became a favorite of 18th-century Continental jewelers, Frederick the Great among them, for its rarity and clarity of color. Reimagined here as a pendant, it carries that same spirit forward: a piece meant to be worn, not preserved behind glass.
