Reimagined Estate Brooch Cuff Bracelet — 14K Gold, Pearl & Blue Zircon, Circa 1930s

The circular motif at the center of this cuff — a ring of alternating cultured pearls and faceted blue zircon, set close together in 14K yellow gold — began life as an estate brooch, dating to somewhere between the 1930s and 1950s. Rather than let it sit in a drawer as a pin no one wears anymore, it has been given a second life: reimagined here as the focal point of a hand-formed double wire cuff, built to sit on the wrist the way it was once meant to sit at the collar.

The circle itself measures 25mm across and holds twelve 3mm pearls and twelve 2.5mm faceted round blue zircons in tight rotation, the cool blue-grey of the zircon playing off the pearls' warm luster. Zircon is one of the most misunderstood gemstones in the trade — frequently confused with cubic zirconia, its synthetic near-namesake, when in fact it is a naturally occurring mineral prized since antiquity, and in its finest blue form, cut with a fire and dispersion that rivals diamond. Retro and Art Deco jewelers reached for it often, drawn to exactly that brilliance. Paired with pearl, the combination reads as both cooler and more architectural than the sweeter Victorian pearl-and-gemstone pairings that came before it — a distinctly mid-century sensibility.

This is the kind of transformation Petra Star does often and believes in completely — honoring the gemstones and craftsmanship of an earlier era rather than letting them sit unworn, and giving them new form without erasing where they came from.
