Antique Amethyst & Seed Pearl Navette Ring, Reimagined from a Late Victorian Brooch — 10K Pink Gold, Size 7
A slender navette of open gold wirework runs the length of the finger, its lines drawn inward like the veins of a leaf toward three round amethysts set one above the other in fine millegrain bezels. Four seed pearls mark the compass points — two in pointed cups at the tips, two in round cups where the shank meets the head — and the whole design lies close to the hand, just 4.3 mm off the finger, so the wirework reads as lace against the skin.
It did not begin as a ring. For more than a century, this design was the heart of a late Victorian bar brooch: a long, narrow pin made to sit at a high collar or the lapel of a jacket, the kind of everyday jewel a woman of the period reached for each morning. Bar brooches survive in great numbers today, and most of them sit unworn, because the collars they were made for are gone. This one has been given a second life.
Rather than lift the stones and start again, we kept the brooch's own central motif intact — the original amethysts, the original pearls, the original wirework — trimmed the long bar back to the heart of the design, removed the pin and catch, and set it on a new 10K pink gold shank.
Turned on end, the horizontal brooch became a vertical navette, and the design proved it had been waiting for exactly that. The pointed pearl cups that once punctuated the bar now finish the tips of the ring, and the lines that ran sideways now lead the eye up the hand.
The navette — French for "little boat" — has been a favored ring silhouette since the eighteenth century, prized because it lengthens and slims the finger. At 27.1 mm long and 13.6 mm wide, this face is a true statement in the old manner, yet the open construction keeps it airy, light.
Amethyst carries one of the oldest stories in the gem world. Its name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos — "not intoxicated" — and the stone was long believed to keep its wearer clear-headed and calm. Its royal purple made it a favorite of the nineteenth century, when it was paired again and again with seed pearls, whose soft luster softens the violet and lifts it. Here the three stones graduate from a 5 mm center to a pair of 3.5 mm companions, deep and clear in their beaded bezels, and the pearls glow quietly at the edges like the stitching on a fine glove.
