Antique Victorian 3 Stone Diamond Ring 18K Gold | 0.93ct Old Mine Cut Diamonds | Dated 1868 Engraved | Gypsy Set Three Stone Trilogy
A Victorian ring carrying its own dated record: engraved to the shank, L. T. Ryder, Jan. 1, 1868, an inscription that anchors this piece to a specific gift, a specific hand, a specific New Year's Day over a century and a half ago. The ring began life set with three pearls, cradled in the same hand-chased gold gallery visible today — the scalloped, carved shoulders and gypsy-style settings are original to the piece and show the confident hand-finishing typical of mid-Victorian goldsmithing. We recently removed the pearls that showed heavy wear and we rebuilt the setting to securely set these three antique old mine cut diamonds, the center stone stepped slightly larger than its two flanking companions in the period's favored graduated trilogy arrangement.
The diamonds themselves read as old mine cut through and through: high crowns, small tables, cushion-shaped outlines with the soft, slightly uneven faceting that catches candlelight-warm flashes rather than the crisp broadcast sparkle of a modern round brilliant. The gold gallery surrounding each stone was rebuilt at the time of the stone swap to accommodate the diamonds' proportions, and the restoration work has settled well — the ring presents today in excellent condition, with no looseness in the settings and the carved shoulder detail crisp and undamaged.
