Some jewels arrive already complete. This one arrived as something rarer: a sapphire that had survived intact in its original turn-of-the-century setting, waiting for the right foundation to make it whole again.

The natural blue sapphire at the heart of this ring is an old European cut stone — a cut that predates modern precision faceting and produces the distinctive, slightly soft brilliance that collectors and connoisseurs recognize immediately. The color is a rich, saturated blue — neither the pale icy tones of later commercial production nor the inky depth of over-saturation, but the deep, considered blue that fine sapphires of this era consistently delivered. Clarity is exceptional: clean under high-power magnification, a quality that speaks to the natural integrity of the stone rather than the corrective treatments that define so much of the modern sapphire market.

The eight-prong basket setting is original — a hallmark of fine jewelry construction from the late Victorian and Edwardian transition period, circa 1900. Eight prongs, rather than the standard six or four, were a signature of top-quality solitaire work of this era: they offered maximum security for precious stones, distributed metal contact evenly around the girdle, and created an architectural symmetry that is unmistakable in period pieces. This basket has been preserved exactly as found.

To honor both the stone and its original setting, we fitted a clean, understated platinum band — newly made, unadorned — that lets the antique basket and its sapphire speak without competition. The result is a piece that occupies two moments in time simultaneously: one foot firmly in the early 20th century, one in the present.
